Music Mashups
DJs have been mixing music together since there have been DJ’s, and sampling is all over popular music now-a-days, but mashups are taking this art to a whole new level. If you’re not familiar with the term, you may know one of the most popular ones that’s been done (thus far) with Lincoln Park and Jay Z. If that doesn’t ring a bell, maybe you need to crawl out from under your rock. Hip Hop, Classic Rock, Metal, Country, Classical, Jazz, Techno, movie sound bytes, it’s all over the place.
While it’s not original in the classic sense, it’s original and artistic in it’s own kind of way. How long can original music actually be created anyway? Eventually, society must literally get to a point where it all Has been done, only so many notes and chords, and combinations and sequences of them, especially when only a minority of them actually sounds good together. So, eventually, will all music just be electronically composed from existing sound bytes and samples? Will the evolution of music be more creative in it’s mixing and producing strange and interesting combinations of what’s already been done? Cuz, it has already been done, it may not be the same person operating the device, but its the same tuning and sequence, so what’s it matter? For appearance? In years down the road, will we all laugh over how many times we’ve heard the same pieces of music in so many different pieces of music? Has it already started?
